Stop Smoking Archives

Many smokers have made an environmentally responsible choice by learning about the new lifestyle product referred to a e-cigarettes.. Streamlined in design and easily linked to a healthy lifestyle choice, e-cigs have quickly captured the interest of the public. Advantages often mentioned are the lack of odor and messy ashtrays and the ability to ingest nicotine without harming or offending others.

David Hammond of the University of Waterloo U.S. reminds us the warnings on tobacco products are among the weakest in the world. There have been few changes to the warnings since they first appear in 1984 on cigarette packs. The warnings point to the most debilitating diseases smoking is known to cause but nothing has been done by the surgeon general or the FDA to require warnings to reflect new evidence of the past 25 years.

Smoking used to be viewed as a sophisticated activity. Cigarette ads on billboards displayed the macho Marlboro Man and the independent Virginia Slims woman as role models for stylish, forward thinking individuals. The wrinkles and coughs smokers experience was not part of the commercials and no mention was made in ads when the Marlboro Man died of lung cancer.

The introduction of the electronic cigarette provided a new choice for those addicted to tobacco. E-cigs provide the nicotine boost of tobacco without clothing and homes permeated with the odor associated with smoking. Smokers opting for the alternative of e-cigarettes can choose from many flavors and nicotine strengths

Many of the 599 additives present in tobacco cigarettes are food additives that have been extensively tested but the testing was for the additives when ingested orally. Chemical properties change when substances are burned and the tests do not prove the safety of inhaling the high number of compounds produced when the additives are consumed by fire. One burning cigarette produces more than 4000 chemical compounds. Reports from major tobacco manufacturers released by the U.S. Department of Health lists 599 additives present in tobacco cigarettes.

Public attitudes toward tobacco have been greatly influenced by the recent focus of society on healthier lifestyles and living in an environmentally friendly way. The health benefits of regular exercise is not conducive to smoking tobacco an hour later. Choosing organic and unprocessed foods for a nutritious diet makes little sense if your meal is followed by inhalation of hundreds of chemical additives and toxins.

The electronic cigarette came under attack by big tobacco and big pharma almost immediately after it’s introduction in 2003. Even the FDA seemed to bow to the pressure of the well finance tobacco and pharmaceutical lobbies in Washington. Manufacturers of arguably one of the most dangerous products sold to consumers were charging that e-cigs were unsafe and the FDA expressed concerns which closely paralleled those of lobbyists.

The public has been adopting e-cigs as their smoking alternative of choice as the debate over smoking continues in the boardrooms of big business and the halls of Congress. 20 ingredients are safer than 4000 and the public understands that fact. The popularity of e-cigarettes as an alternative to tobacco continues to rise.

Mary Kay Rivers is an expert on all facets of electronic cigarettes. Her publications about the organisation for electronic cigarettes and about the best e-cigarette have become very famous.

Cigarette smokers who are trying to find a different method to inhale nicotine should explore electric cigarettes. These are little vaporizing devices that create a lot less odor and detrimental chemicals then normal burning cigarettes. Electric cigarettes function with nicotine infused solution instead of the tobacco plant.

The key to employing these devices is the specially formulated liquid. It is usually blended with common nutritional additives such as propylene glycol and other taste agents to impart a similar flavor and taste to normal smokes.

The nicotine infused solutions that are created to function with electric cigarettes are sometimes labelled e-liquid. There are a few different types of electronic cigarette models in regards to nicotine infused solutions. Certain devices are repeatedly replenished while many are created with disposable cartridges. Each designs may be employed with many different kinds of specially formulated liquids.

There is a range of types of ratios of nicotine solution which may be bought. The concentration of nicotine noticeably influences the strength of the gas. Although any amount of the compound nicotine can be included in liquid certain companies employ amounts similar to what is present in regular and light combustion cigarettes.

For smokers who want to end using cigarettes and employ electric cigarettes as a quit smoking aid there are solutions that contain extremely little or possibly zero nicotine.

Flavor compounds are an additional consideration with e-cigarette mixtures. By combining a variety of compounds makers are able to create mixtures which supply an array of flavors at the time when vaporized. There are fluids that are designed to copy the flavor of regular cigarettes in addition to menthol normal smokes.

There are additionally several manufacturers which manufacture e-liquid that emit vapor much like name brand combustion cigarettes including Camel and Newport. They can additionally be infused with a range of additives such as coco and chocolate.

For all cigarette smokers that are thinking about changing from standard production cigarettes to an e-cigarette unit there is probably a nicotine solution manufactured that is able to make them happy. With the number of different flavor combinations available any kind of cigarette may be replicated via solution.

For cigarette smokers that no longer desire to consume all the dangerous compounds found in burned cigarette smoke there are electronic cigarettes. Electric cigarette contraptions permit smokers to inhale the compound nicotine without inhaling many of the poisonous chemicals present in cigarettes.

It does not matter if you have been smoking for a long time or just a little while, it will prove to be very difficult to quit. I have myself tried a number of times and on each occasion I have always started back for one reason or another. I hate that I can’t seem to stop smoking. Sometimes I wish someone would just take the time to come babysit me day after day to make sure I don’t light up. I am going to try to write up as much information as I can about quitting to serve as a guide and reminder to myself so I can know what I need to do to make it work this time.

Cigarettes are addictive, and even if you know how bad it is for you, it still takes quite a bit of desire and determination to quit and stay quit. You will also need to take some time to prepare, so you can make sure you are mentally ready to give up smoking. Don’t have the mindset that you will fail. If you have a mind set that you will fail, then you most likely will. You will need to keep telling yourself that you can make it through. Did you know the typical craving for a cigarette only lasts 3 minutes. So if you get a craving, set a timer and when that 3 minutes has passed congratulate yourself! If you take the time to make sure you are prepared in advance, it will make a difference in how successful you are when you attempt to quit.

If you know what to expect and how to handle situations that come up that will hinder your success when you attempt to stop smoking, it will be easier for you to stick with a method. Read them over and consider all your options and what you think would work best for you before you decide to live smoke free.

What are your reasons for wanting to stop smoking? Ask yourself this and write it down, make a list. If you are stopping because someone else is telling you to, then you are doomed to fail. You have to want to do this for yourself. Smoking is a personal decision to make, and so is stopping. You will have a hard time being motivated if you really do not want to quit yet. Like a lot of other people, my reason for wanting to stop is for my children. I want to be around for them later in life. Since I’m spending all this time taking care of them, I think it is only fair that I be around long enough for them to take care of me!

What reasons do you have for wanting to smoke? Do you enjoy the flavor, does it help you relax? Everyone has their own personal reasons why they want to keep on smoking. What are your reasons? For most people it is associated with relaxation. Its a break from the norm which becomes the norm. A little bit of “me” time. What we need to try to remember is that you can do this without a cigarette in your hand. So you can keep the same habit of where you go just leave the cancer stick behind.

Research and Learn. Educate yourself on line and see what smoking really is doing to you. Know how it will affect your health and the consequences are of you lighting up. If you know some of the gruesome details then you it can be a great motivational tool. I have found some pretty nasty things on line about what smoking can do to you, so having a visual aid of the nasty will help you. There are some counters you can download on line, and once installed they will pop up when you turn your computer on. A little box pops up and tells you how much money you have saved and how much of your life you have saved by not smoking.

Set realistic goals for yourself. If you set goals that you can not reach then you will just be setting yourself up for failure. Think about it, if it was a easy habit to break, then no one would have a problem quitting cigarettes. Since you know ahead of time that this will be a hard habit to break, you need to set goals that are not impossible for you to reach. My most recent attempt was cold turkey, which did well for 2 weeks, but just one little bout of stress I convinced myself that I “needed” to smoke to relieve the stress. So obviously cold turkey is not for me. So now I will be trying something else. I know I failed at that one try, but it doesn’t mean I cant do it!

With that said, don’t be discouraged if you do not succeed on your first try. This is very common, and most people can’t stop on the first try. This is why it is important for you to be serious about wanting to stop smoking. You may end up trying several different ways to quit before you find one that works for you. You just have to make sure you don’t get so discouraged that you give up on giving up. You will need to make some lifestyle changes to help with the temptation. It will be very hard to quit if everyone around you is still smoking. Go ahead now, before you quit, consider what you will do when these situations come up.

The more prepared you are, the easier it will be for you to stop. This will not be a task that you handle easily if you don’t prepare and start off the right way. You really can not just jump right in and expect it to work right away. Take the time and know what you will do before you start, and try to start on something that you think will work the best for you.

I’m trying to quit smoking and trying use writing my own resources to encourage me to stay on track. Follow me on my journey and see if I can make this work for me. Anyone trying to quit cigarettes can come together and see if any of this information helps!

Hypnosis – How Real Is It?

Hypnosis has endlessly been on picture as a method to contain the most damaging habits, to get people to sound like that of chickens and for all kinds of different reasons. People usually get astounded when they get to hear the word hypnosis. But the truth is Hypnosis is actually not real. It is nothing but parlor trick and entertainment. It is a total rip-off if one has paid for any kind of hypnosis medically or purchased a book which claims itself to teach on self hypnosis or buy audio tapes on the same.

All said and done hypnosis can turn out to be really effective if you use it in the right way for overcoming your habits that are self destructive like that of smoking or over eating. Learning the trick of hypnosis makes a person to improve their self-esteem, make them stronger emotionally and make them feel that they have a control on their life and teach the tricks of being triumphant. How does hypnosis actually work? Well the answer lies within you.

Relax

It basically depends on you and how you respond to certain things or how you react to the instruction that a hypnotist gives you. This is how you begin. First of all a subconscious mind is necessary for you to be under the influence of hypnosis. Start with relaxing completely and follow the instructions of your hypnotist who tells you to shut your eyes and try to relax all the body parts one by one in order to reach the hypnotic state. You will be perhaps asked to relax the toes, then insteps next with the feet then comes the ankles, shins etc.

If you still feel the same at any particular part of the body, you will be most probably told by the hypnotist to relax, till your whole body relaxes, right from the top to the bottom that is from the head to the toe. At this point when you are completely under the influence of hypnosis, the hypnotist will instruct you to concentrate only on the voice or some such sound that further takes you deep into the state of hypnosis. The audio techniques and some particular verbal methods are used to help the person to react to any particular task while you are in the subconscious state.

When you’re in this state, officially under hypnosis, you are bypassing your conscious mind. Your conscious mind is where you actually think about the information coming in. Your conscious mind often discards the things it doesn’t want to hear or thinks are impossible, such as telling yourself to quit smoking.

The conscious mind actually says things like “But I want a cigarette.” When a person bypasses their conscious mind and reaches their subconscious state that is when the individual makes him vulnerable to information and suggestions and can be trained to break their habits and also be taught to succeed in it.

Willingness to try hypnosis

Hypnosis can work. It can be used for entertainment purposes as well as health purposes. It can even be used for self improvement purposes. However, you have to want to go under. You have to try and actually make effort to complete the instructions that the hypnotist gives you.

If not, no amount of suggestion is going to work and everyone involved will have wasted their time. This is mostly why people say it doesn’t work, because possibly they were attempting to go under, had doubts, and that’s why it didn’t work.

Do you really want to know free hypnosis info? Quit smoking hypnosis is one of the treatment available for quit smoking. Why not try this.

Could the time come when allowing electronic cigarettes in the office becomes commonplace? Only two decades ago many employee desks prominently featured an ashtray. Employees and visitors alike could “light up” without the scornful looks that would be common today. Even when non smoking signs appeared it was not unusual for a business person to pull an ashtray from his desk drawer for a customer to use. These days it’s not even safe to ask if you can smoke inside a building.

Break rooms may be provided and often divided into sections for smokers and non-smokers. If you work in any government building you will go outside to indulge your habit. Many businesses have followed the same path. It’s not uncommon to notice small groups of people huddled outside the entrance to a business as they get their nicotine “fix”. As a result, offices are cleaner and smell better. Businesses have reduced the risk of fire posed by burning cigarettes.

Complaints of smokers have quieted in recent years as they accept the strong anti-smoking attitude of the general public. They are now often reduced to defending themselves against business customers who complain when workers are allowed to smoke outside the entrance of a business. Some employers have provided covered outdoor areas with tables and chairs for the use of smoking employees. This is one solution and allows smoking areas to be located away from the building when there is sufficient outdoor space available.

Employees who frequently leave their desk to smoke are detrimental to the bottom line of their employer. Even a 10 minute absence requires the employee to lose more work time as he re-focuses on the work he was doing before the break. Phones aren’t answered and non-smoking co-workers often resent breaks taken by smokers. Offers to provide help for employees who want to quit smoking have been creatively used by businesses. Offers pf cash awards, free counseling and free nicotine replacement products to encourage smokers to quit were well received. CEO’s with less compassion simply instituted strict policies that prohibit smoking at work.

The first non-smoking programs offered by business leaders were very popular. Eventually, those who truly wanted to quit smoking became non-smoker. The pool of people anxious or even willing to participate in non-smoking program narrowed. The time is approaching when smoking employees will be only those who have no interest in quitting. Allowing electronic cigarettes at the workplace could be a logical, though controversial, solution.

People nearby are not harmed by the vapor produced by e-cigarettes. This alternative smoking product fills the need for nicotine while avoiding the release of chemical compounds created by tobacco when it burns. Walls and ceilings in offices are not coated with tar from tobacco smoke and there is no disgusting odor of stale smoke. Unlike other nicotine replacement products, e-cigarettes are not invisible. If you use a patch, gum or a lozenge to replace cigarettes no one knows you are doing so.

The e-cig looks like a cigarette but may also be shaped like a ball point pen. Many brands closely resemble the tobacco version they are designed to replace and that image alone can cause a negative reaction among those who oppose smoking. The biggest hurdle will be meeting the objections of those who are against any form of nicotine use whether safe or not.

E-cigarette popularity and use continues to grow with consumers looking for a safer alternative to tobacco. Electronic cigarettes at the workplace could be a common sight five years from now as the true facts and benefits of e-cigs become more widely known and accepted.

Lung Repair After Quitting Smoking

When I quitting smoking I found that repairing my lungs as soon as possible was essential to my plan. I think the fact that I was doing something to promote my health immediately, gave me something to really concentrate on and made me feel positive about the whole idea.

So what did I do to start the repair process? Well within the first few days of quitting I decided to try a lung detoxification or in short a lung detox. What this does is speed up the process of removing tar, toxins and chemicals from the lung tissue that have built up over the period of time that you have been smoking, and so speeds up the lung repair.

The lung detox was surprisingly easy to do but the effects were quite staggering so if you are thinking of doing it then prepare yourself for a shock. I expected to have some evidence that my body was getting rid all the gunge in my lungs but didn’t expect it to happen so quickly and, I hasten to add in such volume. It was a real eye opener to see just how much tar I had in my lungs after 12 years of smoking. It’s also a side effect to feel mildly sick but that passes after a day or two. What I wasn’t aware of that it can take anything up to 15 years for the body to break down the tar and toxins naturally. I don’t know about you but that is way too long for me to wait!

Having gone through the lung detoxification, one thing I decided there and then though was that I was never going back to smoking again. Witnessing first hand the amount of black, nasty stuff that had gathered in my lungs having been a smoker was enough to make me quit for good. I’m not one of those converted smokers that bangs on at every smoker I meet to try and get them to stop. I completely understand the smokers mind and some people just enjoy it and so good for them. I think though that I had forgotten what it was like to have clean healthy lungs.

So what happens when the lungs are repairing? The main damage from smoking is done to the alveoli and the cilia. The alveoli are tiny sacks which transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. The alveoli damage caused by smoking is quite severe and some believe that it is never fully repaired even after many years, but don’t allow this to put you off quitting. On the other hand there is much better news about cilia. These are microscopic hairlike structures which actually sweep out particles and toxins from the lungs. Smoking paralyzes the cilia and so allows particles to build up. Once you have stopped smoking and the repairing of the lungs begins to happen the cilia start to function again and so strangely enough you may develop a cough. This is a good sign. The lung detox actually brought this stage on very quickly, two or three days to be exact and then fast tracked the cleaning of the lungs to speed up the repairing process. Within 3 or 4 weeks you start to feel a whole lot better.

In a manner that suggested the government agency was bowing to pressure exerted by big tobacco, in 2008 the FDA began issuing statements regarding potential safety problems posed by electronic cigarettes.

We have known for over 40 years that smoking tobacco is a serious health danger. It was then that warnings were added to cigarette packs yet the U.S. now has one of the weakest warnings used globally. After forty years of proof of the dangers in tobacco, the FDA moved in 2009 to regulate the tobacco industry. You may be surprised to learn big tobacco conglomerates welcomed this new regulating effort. Of course they did. The regulations are likely to be based around their current practices and a result would be to make it far more difficult for a competitor to enter the marketplace.

After hinting about banning electronic cigarettes several times, the FDA established a ban on e-cigarettes and electronic smoking supplies imported from China. The reasons offered by the FDA for this ban seemed to vary but then coalesced into a “fear” that e-liquids used to refill electronic cigarettes would lure underage people into smoking and addict them to nicotine.

A Federal Judge issued a ruling on January 15, 2010 striking down the FDA ban on importing e-cigarettes. The judge criticized the FDA sharply, citing aggressive efforts by the agency to attempt to portray a recreational product as a drug or device.

Referring to the new tobacco division created within the FDA to regulate tobacco companies, the court opined the same regulations could be applied to electronic cigarettes. Regulation of marketing claims and contents of products should be applied to both versions of smoking products according to the court ruling.

Responding to the court decision brought a charge from the FDA about “health issues” surrounding e-cigarettes. It appears the youth argument didn’t sway the court so a new “reason” was presented. Tobacco companies stand firmly behind the FDA efforts to eliminate electronic cigarettes. What could be better than to have a government agency strike down your competition?

One great outcome for tobacco companies would be allowing the FDA to set separate standards and restrictions for e-cigarettes. This would significantly increase the cost of buying e-cigs and refill supplies. Currently, tobacco products can’t compete in price with alternative electronic products.

The court decision defined a need to scrutinize the relationships that exist between tobacco companies, pharmaceutical concerns and the FDA. Taxes from the sales of tobacco products put billions of dollars in federal and state government coffers annually. Many of the attempts to create fear of electronic smoking alternatives seem to be more concerned with the financial bottom line than with the protection of public health the FDA is charged with. Had big tobacco been the industry that introduced and promoted electronic cigarettes it is doubtful a controversy would exist.

The unusual steps taken by the FDA have created their own controversy about the focus of this government agency. The FDA has never proposed banning tobacco products to protect the health of the public. Traditionally, the FDA issues statements and warnings and takes action only after conducting full scientific testing. In the case of the FDA vs electronic cigarette manufacturers, the FDA has ignored testing to develop standards and instead has focused on finding reasons to ban a product that is arguably safer than the product it may eventually replace.

Mary Kay Rivers has become a true expert in the field of electronic cigarettes. Her articles about the history of electronic cigarettes or about the best electronic cigarettes are well-known.

The word “electronic” may cause consumers to think of e-cigarettes as complex technical systems. That is far from the truth. You may be surprised when you learn how electronic cigarettes work.

No higher education is required and you don’t need to take a course before trying an e-cigarette. Product development is only successful when technology focuses on both aspects of product creation. The first aspect is the technical work done to create a totally unique product that fills a need or solves a problem. Equally important if you want to create a product that will sell is to make that product user friendly. The goal of every product developer is to launch a product that works exactly as it is supposed to and is easy and reliable for buyers to use.

An excellent example of development that results in a user friendly product is the electronic cigarette. The circuitry in the atomizer and battery components of e-cigs combine to form a smoking experience that is simple and satisfying for those choosing a tobacco alternative.

There are two parts for most electronic cigarettes. The first is an atomizer and the second is a battery section. Both a long and short battery is included in most starter kits. One battery can be on the battery charger that is included while the second can be in use. Initial use of the e-cigarette requires charging the battery for 2-3 hours.

Putting together your new e-cig does not involve a plastic bags fill with tiny parts to assemble. You only need to take the atomizer and screw on the charged battery and you are ready to go. That’s not so hard, is it?

The atomizer is the mouthpiece and the terms are used interchangeably. A small cup inside holds absorbent material saturated with a flavored nicotine solution. Other models come with cartridges pre-filled with e-liquid and are disposed of and replaced as needed. A small heating element located in the atomizer is activated by the battery producing a vapor mist for the smoker to inhale.

The batteries are most often rechargeable lithium ion and battery life is determined by size and type of the battery, frequency of use of the e-cig and the quality of the product. An LED light at the tip of the battery is a feature that has been a part of e-cigs since their early development. Meant to represent the fire of a lit cigarette the light is often red or orange. On newer models, users may often choose any color of LED they prefer.

The best electronic cigarettes are automatic and produce vapor when the user draws (puffs) on the mouthpiece. The movement of air through the e-cig activates the heating coil powered by the battery and the result is vapor released by the heating of the nicotine laced e-liquid. As you can see, the electronic cigarette operates on the same principle as a tobacco smoke. With tobacco products, drawing air through the cigarette increases the heat of the fire at the tip and creates smoke. The difference lies in the health benefit of inhaling a vapor mist that quickly dissipates while avoiding the chemical compounds of toxic tobacco smoke.

People with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) suffer from shortness of breath cause by narrowing of the airways. The symptoms are similar to those of asthma sufferers but the narrowed airway is reversible with asthma. COPD becomes progressively worse with time and cannot be reversed.

Cigarette smoking is the main cause of COPD. The diagnosis is a combination of two chronic diseases. An inflammatory response to noxious gases and particles inhaled from burning tobacco leads to chronic bronchitis in the larger airway. At the same time, the alveoli of the lungs are damaged by inflammation that leads to destruction of lung tissue and a diagnosis of emphysema.

Symptoms of COPD can worsen suddenly and result in an acute episode where the patient is struggling to breathe. Acute attacks may be triggered by inflections in the body or pollutants in the air. Tests to diagnose COPD will measure the volume of air inhaled by the patient as well as the speed of the air entering and leaving the airways as the person inhales and exhales.

Those who suffer from COPD require long term oxygen therapy. We’ve all noticed people in public who are carrying an oxygen pack or pulling a cart with an oxygen tank to help them breathe.

COPD cannot be cured but it is possible to manage the disease in an effort to slow the progress of symptoms and to prevent acute occurrences. Physicians recommend strategies for management that are often prefaced with a demand that the patient stop smoking immediately. Further management tactics include rehabilitation, the use of inhalers as drug therapy and obtaining recommended vaccinations.

Highly addicted tobacco smokers often ignore medical advice to stop smoking after receiving a diagnosis of COPD. They may believe they can’t quit but more often they feel it’s too late to quit as the damage to their lungs has been done. It is sad to see a person irrevocably linked to a tank of oxygen while inhaling yet more toxic tobacco smoke.

The rehabilitation includes sessions of exercise and of breathing steam in an effort to ease the flow of oxygen through the patient’s airway. The suggestions to use nicotine patches or gums are often ignored by those who are addicted to the experience of smoking. The recommendations are not seen as viable alternatives by a person with a habit that includes puffing on a cigarette, inhaling smoke and holding a cigarette in their hand.

Highly addicted tobacco users can enjoy the smoking experience they crave without additional lung damage by choosing to smoke e-cigarettes. They will have the full smoking experience without the toxic chemical compounds inhaled from burning tobacco. Although the evidence is only anecdotal to date, some COPD sufferers who have abandoned tobacco in favor of e-cigs claim an improvement in their overall quality of life. The absence of toxic compounds is a likely reason for this improvement but users also seem to think the vapor of e-cigs provides benefits similar to inhaling steam. Only careful testing in the future will resolve the question of whether this is a real benefit for COPD patients who cannot quit smoking.
